Still Trying to Dry Up Your Oily Skin? Just Say No!

If you have oily skin, and chances are you’ve faced oiliness at one point or another, you know finding a balance between shiny skin and overly dry skin can be tough. A lot of skincare designed to help oily skin relies on harsh or stripping ingredients that are too drying which isn’t what oily skin needs!

Remember, oily skin isn’t always what it seems. Sometimes the surface can look and feel shiny but underneath, the deeper layers of your skin may actually be dry and yearning for some moisture.  And although oily skin is associated with acne and blemishes, a normal amount of oil is actually a positive. Oil helps keep skin feeling soft and hydrated as well as helps keep skin pliable and flexible.

When is oily skin a problem? You guessed it. When too much oil is produced, leading to clogged pores, blackheads or worse, acne. So what is a shiny skinned gal supposed to do?

For almost all skins, there are three golden rules to follow when trying to address oily skin with skincare.

Rule #1. Avoid harsh ingredient that over dry the skin. Sure, at first you think ‘ahh, my skin is so perfect’ but it’s a short-lived victory. Stripping away too much oil just leaves all skin dehydrated and believe it or not, more oily! To try and balance over dryness caused by SD alcohol, denatured alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, sulfates, and fragrance, your skin will kick-up oil production.

Rule #2. Avoid heavy oils and emollients such as unfractionated coconut oil, cocoa butter, sesame and wheat Germ oil, Shea butter, petrolatum, lanolin, silicones, and propylene glycol. While wonderful for dry skin, on an oily complexion these ingredients tend to ‘sit’ on the skin, leaving it sticky and shiny. Plus, they can contribute to clogged pores.

Rule #3. Reach for lightweight liquids, serums, gels, lotions, and foams to help combat the appearance of oil while also providing weightless moisture. Clarisma is clean California beauty created for all skins that uses fruit enzymes derived from Pineapple, Papaya and Caviar Lime that help gently clarify oily skin but without any damage like dryness, peeling, redness, or irritation.

So just say no to the oily skin shuffle and stop the cycle of oily/dry/oily/dry with clean skincare that understands the needs of oily skin, and makes not just your skin but you feel amazing!
