Winter Skincare Routine

Finding the right winter skincare routine can be tricky.  The air is dry, the temperatures are colder, and you're probably not spending as much time outdoors. But don't let that stop you from having healthy and beautiful skin all season long!  Here are a few winter skincare tips to help you get started:

1. MOISTURIZE

Cool, dry winter air will rob your skin of moisture.  The best way to keep your skin moisturized throughout the winter months is to consistently use a good quality moisturizer.  Try to use something that contains humectants (moisture-holding compounds) lie glycerin, aloe vera, and shea butter.  We highly recommend the CLARISMA Cali Dreaming Daily Moisturizer, our hydrating yet lightweight moisturizer for all skin types.

2. USE SUNSCREEN

Even if the clouds are out and it seems the sun is not hot, UV rays can (and will) still penetrate your skin leading to premature aging.  As a refresher, SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, a measure of how much protection your sunscreen offers.  SPF 30+ is recommended for daily use, and if you're going outside, apply before you go.  Reapply every 2 hours you are outside.  If you're not using any sunscreen, them you should definitely start now. Your future skin will thank you!

3. EXFOLIATE

Warm indoor air can dry out your skin. Exfoliating helps remove dead cells and unclog your pores, leaving your skin feeling smooth and refreshed.  To exfoliate, use a gentle scrub once or twice each week.  Make sure to choose a product without harsh chemicals, since these can strip away your natural oils.  We recommend the CLARISMA Malibu Blush Gentle Exfoliating Scrub with skin-calming herbs and oils plus luffah fruit fibers for ultra gentle, yet effective, skin exfoliation. Slather on skin-friendly oils and/or a heavy moisturizer after, for smooth glowing skin.

4. CLEANSE

Change your cleanser for the cold winter months.  Cleansing removes dirt an oil buildup from your face, giving you a fresh, clean complexion.  Choose a cleanser with natural ingredients that don't irritate your skin. CLARISMA's Cool Ocean Breeze Daily Cleanser uses natural fruit extracts to leave skin feeling refreshed and clean, not stripped or dry, and there's even a little shimmer to remind you to rinse your face thoroughly after cleansing, something we all need to do better!

5. EAT HEALTHY FOODS

Cozy winter nights in can involve comfort eating and drinking. But, heavy, high carbohydrate eating and snacking can contribute to acne and breakouts by upsetting your hormonal balance and immune system.  Alcohol will dehydrate your skin, as well as contribute to vitamin and nutrient loss.  So focus on whole, healthy foods as much as possible, and get those veggies in through warming and comforting soups.

6. HYDRATE

Proper hydration isn't just important for your insides, it's important for your outsides, too!  Drinking enough water every day keeps your skin cells plump and prevents dehydration, which can lead to a dull complexion and the formation of wrinkles.  Dry winter air and heaters inside can speed up skin dehydration. The rough rule of thumb is to drink "one ounce of water for each pound you weigh."
